Is the Steam system worthwhile, and if so, how does it work?

I've been a casual PC gamer over the past several years. However, the Steam system still seems to be popular these days and generally doing well. I'm somewhat interested in possibly getting into the "Steam" system by Valve Corporation. However, I don't understand how Steam works and was hoping someone might be able to explain it to me. Their own website doesn't seem to explain it
